How important is surge protection on extension leads?

I’ve also noticed the more expensive brands make a big deal of high amps protection.
I’m thinking about protecting my new Tv as well as the PC.

Surge protection is used for devices that would react adversely to power spikes, but the truth is appliances are at risk of damage in a power surge. Having protection on an extension lead just because it’s and extension makes no sense. By all means protect something like your PC, TV and stereo but most household appliances can withstand small differences in voltage. Overload protection or high amps as you call it is a good idea.
