very a surge proteftor will keep you from having a fireif you over load the owerstrip it will shut you system off and youwill not start fire from cicut over load, but look fora power strip wth a surge protectre built in, not all power strips have them, makesure the packed says surge protector on it, if it does not it is only a powerstrip with no protection, andwhen it does go off all you do is push therest button on the powerstrip and it resets andallwsall things plus into to come back on and does not allow or permit anythingto blow out

Surge protection is used for devices that would react adversely to power spikes, but the truth is appliances are at risk of damage in a power surge. Having protection on an extension lead just because it's and extension makes no sense. By all means protect something like your PC, TV and stereo but most household appliances can withstand small differences in voltage. Overload protection or high amps as you call it is a good idea.

Most surge protectors for computer use are low voltage and are there to stop transient spikes in voltage up to 400v from damaging your computer – they certainly won’t cope in lightning storms; you will have to pay mega bucks for high current protection.

Very important. My previous PC was ruined by a power cut because i had no surge protection.
